The Stories and Music of Lieder and Mélodie with Graham Johnson

The Stories and Music of Lieder and Mélodie with Graham Johnson

The most evocative and emotionally bracing songs share a common, extra-worldly dimension: when words and music were put together, something of the writer’s psyche was plucked out of time to be re-created in performance. But that moment of clairvoyance is not simply spirited away and waiting to be invoked by voice or instrument. This program, curated by Graham Johnson, pierces the veil with insightful commentary on the life events surrounding the moment of composition, the story the underlying poetry is telling, or the threads between other familiar work by the writers—all paired with the songs themselves in performances shaped to share the closer connection.

This program is part of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute 2023 festival season.

“Your Tired, Your Poor”: Migration in Song

The “other,” the stranger in a strange land, has always been with us. The hope of those seeking to better their lives, the fears of those forced to flee danger at home, and the despair of the enslaved migrant have inspired music that captures the full range of their experience. This program, curated by Cori Ellison, traces the migrant experience in music ranging across songs of the Sephardim expelled from Inquisition Spain; Schubert and Schumann’s German Romantic “Wanderer”; the Africans brought forcibly to our shores; the Jewish, Irish, Italian, and Asian refugees who built 20th-century America; and today’s songs of asylum seekers fleeing Ukraine and Latin America.

This program is part of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute 2023 festival season.

Sir John Stainer: The Crucifixion

A Good Friday tradition at The Brick Presbyterian Church for almost a century, Sir John Stainer’s Lenten choral meditation, The Crucifixion, will be performed by the professional choir of the Brick Church, conducted by Dr. Raymond Nagem. Nathaniel will perform the role of Jesus.

Premiered in 1887, The Crucifixion is a fixture of the English choral tradition. Musicians today still enjoy performing choruses such as "Fling wide the gates," and careers have been founded on The Crucifixion's baritone and tenor solos. The chorus "God so loved the world" enjoys an independent existence as an anthem in parish choirs across the globe—a minor classic in its own right and a beautifully expressive piece of choral writing.

Admission is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected.

The Brearley Singers: The Choral Arc of the Universe Is Song

The Brearley Singers’ holiday concert program highlights matters of critical importance in our unsettled world, immigration and the immigrant experience among them. Conrad Susa’s Carols and Lullabies, a collection of ten Spanish-themed songs, uses texts of Basque, Catalonian, Puerto Rican, Spanish, Andalucian, Castilian, and Mexican origin to spin a narrative of many moods and rhythms. The other featured work is a cantata of the Ellis Island experience, The Golden Door by Ronald Perera, which draws on oral histories of immigrants. As Perera himself put it, "In the simple, flat prose of these interviews I found poetry, and I found universal human themes of uprooting and transplanting, longing and hope, suffering and fear, courage and despair, and perhaps most characteristic among immigrants to America, gratitude."

Nathaniel will perform as the bass soloist in both Carols and Lullabies and The Golden Door.
